Your Luebeck visit should become a very special experience. Threfore we would be glad beeing on hand with help and advice and sharing our knowledge and experiences – talk to us!

Below please find some personally selected leisure tips and suggestions, tested and approved by our family:

Museums:

  • Willy-Brandt House (the impressive life of world famous Luebeck Nobel Peace Prize winner – exciting presentation/admission free!)
  • Four-master Passat (explore sailors’ live on a real tall ship – visit the 100 years old Passat in Travemuende)
  • Buddenbrook Museum (one of the famous novels acting in Luebeck was written by Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann. Here you can explore how a typical merchant family lived 150 years ago – the house , an extraordinary literary museum, is aranged like a walk through this typical era of Luebeck)
  • Günter Grass-House (a museum dedicated only to the work of the third Lübeck Nobel Prize winner and world famous novelist Günter Grass)
  • Museum Harbour (watching beautiful old ships in the museum harbour – walking distance from the historic city centre)
  • Hanseatic League Museum (the opening highlight at spring 2015)

Sport & leisure activities:

  • Open air swimming  Krähenteich (the natural pool in the historic town, beautifully situated for cooling yourself down inbetween, family-friendly prices)
  • Monkey Moves (great climbing hall for rainy days – all levels)
  • Bowling (something else for rainy days and nights!)
  • Billards (billards cafe “Fünününü”: on sundays super special offer for the whole family!)
  • Canoe/Kayak (canoeing yourself…: the experience on the river Wakenitz, also known as “Amazon of the North”)
  • Boat trips (…or take a tour, e.g. around the historic town and into the harbor or to Travemünde)
  • Swingolf (golf for Dummies / with or without kids)
  • Cycle tour (We’ll give you the bikes (from February 2015) – but pedalling is on your own)
  • Strandkorb (rent a beach chair – typical for the German Baltic Sea Beach, some lenders even have a cool or hot drink and a magazine service)
  • Fishing (experience on the Baltic Sea with MS Charlotte, starting in Niendorf and after that having delicious fish in beer batter with potato salad or a traditionelland well-filled fish roll at Klüver’s Harbour-Smokehouse)

Great time together with your kid(s):

Culture:

  • Theater Lübeck (beautiful Art Nouveau Theater with a great and diverse program – a successful evening is guaranteed)
  • Puppet Theater (not only performances for young people but also a program for adults)
  • Concerts at the University of Music (Music students show their skills – just go and listen – most often “admission fee” – recommended! )
  • Music & Congress Centre (everything is on the program: from the classical concert to an rock events and in addition a brilliant acoustic)
  • Ancient Fishing Village Gothmund (here the time stands still – the 500 year old fishing village is worth a visit)
  • Fishing Port Travemünde (and some more fish, of course fresh from fishermen’s boats or inbetween two buns “to go”…)

UNESCO-World Heritage Luebeck:

  • Tower and vault guide at St. Mary’s church (a unique experience above the highest brick vault of the world, 40 meters above zero)
  • Alleys & Courtyards (leave the beaten tracks and discover the still inhabited quiet oasis of the old town, a remnant of the medieval urban development and accessible to everyone)
  • Viewing platform of St. Peter’s Church (give yourself an overview of Luebeck an its surroundings at the height of 50 meters (lift) – if good weather conditions up to the Maritim Hotel in Travemuende)
  • Town Hall (the most beautiful town hall in Germany – daily tours to visit and discover the time-honoured and historic rooms)
  • Guided tour through the city (learn about Lübeck with a guided or an individual city tour)
  • Holsten Gate (one of the most famous German buildings was printed on the 50 Deutsch Mark banknote and had almost been demolished 150 years ago)

Restaurants and Co.: Food, Drink, Nightlife:

  • Fischhütte (take a fast fish sandwich in between or maybe order a fish dish)
  • Suppentopf (very popular among the people of Lübeck : delicious soup or stew at Fleischhauerstrasse 36. During lunch time there normally is a queue and the pots are quickly empty. Then it’s closed until next day. So please be early!)
  • Ristorante SeasSide (Pizza and Co. on the sun deck of a floating ship made from concrete (!) – insider location at a walking distance from city centre)
  • Restaurant Vai (dine in the small and cosy restaurant at Hüxstrasse, excellent dishes on a high quality level. But also good value  lunch menues)
  • Restaurant Salis (Steak specialties and Other in Atlantic Hotel’s restaurant – great service, great food, no hustle and bustle in the dining room)
  • Restaurant Sailors-Club Schlutup (in the district Schlutup, sitting close to the River Trave, watch ships and eat fresh fish at reasonable prices – recommended!)
  • Schiffergesellschaft zu Lübeck (500 years ago: captain’s pub, today: destination for many tourists from all over the world. Nevertheless well worth seeing because of the fascinating history and the impressive interiors of the venerable house)
  • Restaurant Wullenwever (first class cuisine of celebrity chef Roy Petermann for gourmets and other hedonists in an old mansion dating from 1585)
  • Brewery Restaurant Brauberger (drink a freshly brewed beer in a Romanesque cellar from 1225 – it feels like old times …)
  • Cafe & Bar Celona (a sundowner in the Bar Celona – there is no place including service at Luebeck’s waterline where the sun set lasts longer)
  • Strandsalon (Luebeck’s chill location on the peninsula “Wallhalbinsel” – the quick beach event for in between)
  • Jazz-Cafe (the appropriate address for the nightcap to close successful holiday day)

Festivals + Events:

  • Travemuende Week (the famous summer-sailing-festival – follow the yachting regatta close and in real time on the Sail-Cube, a 15m² video display)
  • Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (classical, jazz and other: top class music at various stages all over in Schleswig-Holstein region – to join one of the concerts it is recommended to buy tickets as soon as possible!)
  • Duckstein Festival (free and open air, every year in August: music, theater and culinary delight at the bank of river Trave close to the Music and Congress Centre)
  • Nordic Film Days (Highlight for cineasts in November: 5 days nonstop cinema with approx. 200 movies from all over North and Northeast of Europe)
  • Christmas Market (feel the Christmas magic and enjoy the unique athmosphere of Christmas time – visit the famous Christmas Market in the historic part of the town)

Shopping:

  • Hüxstrasse (one of the oldest street of Lübeck with lovely shops to stroll and for relaxed shopping, don’t miss it!)
  • Fleischhauerstrasse (another street to discover – off the beaten track of the main pedestrian area)
  • Antiques Shop Bannow (beautiful old furniture, Royal Copenhagen Porcelain, silver, craft work and old jewelry – best to buy at Antiques Bannow – realistic prices and fair advice also for antiques Dummies)
  • Luebeck Marzipan (not to beat as a souvenir or to pinch from – the original marzipan from famous Niederegger, at Niederegger Cafe there is also a marzipan museum (admission free) and take your time and really try the traditional nut cake in the cafe!)
  • Wein Merchant’s Carl Tesdorpf (since 1678 Tesdorf is trading with the famous Luebeck red wine “Rotspon” in the wellknown Mengstraße, some few meters far from the Buddenbrookhaus)
  • Grande Mercato Andronaco (for a cozy Italian dinner at Trude44 – large supermarket offering only Italian products (pasta, chees, bread, sliced, wein…) and an always crowded snack restaurant with realistic prices)
  • IKEA (shopping with Scandinavian flair in the new LUV shopping center – but not just Billy)

Surrounding:

  • Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg (inspiration for the own basement at home – you will gape in astonishment about the 12 million Euro larges model railway in the world – an event for young AND old, male and female: 1,500 m² model railway, 13 km of tracks and 1,000 trains – always queues at the ticket office, best to book tickets in advance)
  • Wismar (another UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1 hour’s driving distance, but only almost as beautiful as Lübeck  😉
  • Rostock (third Hanseatic city in a reachable distance with the largest zoo at the Baltic Coast)
  • Timmendorfer Strand (see and be seen: Cafe “Important” – actually Café “Engels Eck” – it is where the upper crust hangs around)
  • Holstein Switzerland (almost like the original but not so expensive: castles, landscape gardens and over 20 lakes are ideal for walking, cycling and exploring)
  • Fehmarn (island feeling in one of the sunniest regions of Germany – and even if it should rain don’t miss to visit the legendary submarine U11)
